Tools for independent musicians
How to choose tools for creation, organization, collaboration and release without accumulating unnecessary software.

Choose by problem, not hype
The historical article recommended specific tools from its time. Today it is more durable to start with the need: record, organize, collaborate, formalize, distribute or communicate.
Reduce duplication
Two tools solving the same problem often add friction. Prefer one primary source for files, decisions and versions.
Protect open formats
Where possible, keep WAV, MIDI, stems, exportable metadata and downloadable documents. Do not let the project depend on one vendor.
Automate repetitive work
Naming, backups, metadata, credits and release checklists can be systematized when automation reduces errors.
Review your stack periodically
Evaluate cost, continuity, exportability, privacy and compatibility instead of keeping tools only from habit.
