How to write a song step by step

A practical method to turn an idea into a song through foundation, layers, structure, contrast and revision.

How to write a song step by step

Start with a small idea

A short melody, rhythmic pattern, arpeggio, chord progression or texture can be enough. The goal is to create something clear enough to suggest the next step without judging it too early.

Build a foundation

The historical guide suggested drums and bass. That still works, but it is not a rule: rhythm, harmony, a loop, a vocal or a lead instrument can all establish the foundation.

Add layers with a purpose

Each new track should contribute rhythm, harmony, melody, texture, dynamics or contrast. If two elements occupy the same space without a distinct role, simplify.

Create structure and movement

Use groups of 4, 8 or 16 bars when useful, not as a requirement. Bring elements in and out to create expectation, release and contrast.

Revise with distance

Record a version, leave it for a while and return with fresh ears. Check whether the central idea is still clear and whether every section earns its length.
